Phlebotomist Training

Phlebotomists have to go through extensive phlebotomy training to become certified in their particular field. Because people with a phlebotomy license are in such high demand, many training programs will accommodate any schedule or budget. Most phlebotomy training can be done in less than a year. Many schools offer morning, afternoon, and evening classes to accommodate their students’ work and personal life and are open for extended hours. Often they also have resource labs that allow students to learn at their own pace and convenience.
Phlebotomy training is usually provided at a variety of institutions. Anyone interested in pursuing this type of practice should look into the different programs as much as possible to get a feel for which types of programs will benefit them the greatest. Since the phlebotomist is considered part of the laboratory team, they must go through the phlebotomy training aspects of specimen collection and processing.
Generally, the program includes safe and efficient work practices to obtain specimens, blood collection by capillary or venipuncture, specimen handling, labeling, sorting, preparation for testing, communication, employability skills, and emergency procedures. The coursework also includes anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system and phlebotomy techniques.
In addition to the learned material, phlebotomist training must also include hands-on work. Therefore, in addition to classroom training, an externship or clinical practicum is often required before graduation.
The training typically consists of unpaid work experience to gain hands-on experience before entering the workforce. Upon passing the courses and exams, based on completing the type of formal training plus one-year full-time employment in an accredited laboratory, it may qualify the student for several employment opportunities.
